Anything that comes apart it should be taken apart before we arrive. When moving house or putting things into self-storage space costs money. We always strive to condense everything into the smallest space possible, a small van on the day is always cheaper than a larger one and self-storage is charged by the square foot of floor space required. We generally start with the upstairs, so a clear run to the front door it is essential so make sure the landings and stairways are clear of boxes and bags etc. Wardrobes must be empty, although you can leave clothes in the chest of drawers as we can take the drawers out if it is too heavy. Clothes travel well in recycling sacks and always fill your suitcases, you would be amazed at how often we carry out empty cases!

  • Wardrobes
(a removal man’s nightmare!) often will not fit down the stairs or up the stairs at your new home and the flat pack variety does not always “travel” well and they don’t always retain their integrity when being heaved up and down stairs!

  • Beds
if they are the modern self assembly type, if they remain intact are often too large to fit down stairs. When moving house or putting things into self-storage space costs money. We always strive to condense everything into the smallest space possible, a small van on the day is always cheaper than a larger one and self-storage is charged by the square foot of floor space required.

  • Books
must be in boxes, but make sure the boxes of books are small and strong. Books are always heavy so please ensure the boxes aren’t over loaded and that the boxes won’t fall apart when we lift them.

  • Boxes
must be well packed and be closed lidded. We need to be able to stack boxes on top of boxes so taking up less space. Boxes of fragiles should be clearly labelled and extra care will always be taken of these. Don’t over-fill boxes with heavy things, although fit and able we aren’t Charles Atlas, as a general rule “If you can’t lift them, we can’t shift them!” All boxes should be clearly labled.

  • Sofas
are nearly always tricky. Make sure you measure up your new home. Ensure that the front and sitting room doors are wide enough to accommodate your sofa, although we are very good at getting things in and out of houses we are only removal men and should you need a magician then maybe you should have called Dynamo!

  • Dining Tables
too are often too large to manoeuvre round corners so the legs will have to come off. We come with a tool kit so can help with this type of thing.

  • Washing Machines and Dishwashers
must be un-plumbed and drained with the hoses inside the appliance. If they leak then your furniture could be soaked.

  • Cookers
must be disconnected by you as we are not permitted to help you with this.

  • Garden furniture
should be taken apart and be clean and dry if possible.

  • Pot Plants
always occupy a lot of space as they can’t be stacked, again space costs money, so bear this in mind. Also avoid watering plants for a couple of days before the move as water weighs a lot and they might leak into the van and spoil your things.

  • Pets and Children
They should be elsewhere if at all possible. Pets can get very distressed on moving day and cats especially will often disappear. Remember we will need to leave the doors open as we work. Small children always want to help, but as their assistance isn’t generally appreciated, it’s best if they weren’t around!

  • Tea making stuff
should always be the last out, first in and be clearly marked. Milk and 2 sugars for me. Chocolate biscuits are excellent for keeping the energy levels up!
